Vein Sclerotherapy

Vein sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment used to reduce or eliminate small varicose veins and spider veins.  At National Vascular Associates, we offer sclerotherapy as a safe, effective option for restoring clearer skin and better venous health.

What Is Vein Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy involves using a chemical solution or foam, known as a sclerosant, that irritates the lining of the vein. This irritation leads the vein to seal shut, rerouting blood flow to healthier veins. Over time, the treated vein is naturally absorbed by the body, often resulting in visible improvement within a few weeks.

Common Indications for Sclerotherapy

Spider Veins (Telangiectasias)

Thin, web-like veins usually found near the surface of the skin.

Small Varicose Veins

Subcutaneous veins that appear raised and may cause discomfort.

Residual Veins

Those left behind after other vein procedures, such as ablations.

How the Procedure Works

1

Preparation

  • The treatment area is cleansed, and a local anesthetic cream may be applied for comfort.
  • Ultrasound guidance can be used for deeper veins..
2

Injection

  • A sclerosant is injected directly into the target vein using a fine needle.
  • Patients may experience a mild burning or tingling sensation.
3

Vein Closure

  • The sclerosant irritates the vein lining, causing it to collapse.
  • Blood flow is then redirected to healthier veins in the area.
4

Aftercare

  • A compression bandage or stocking is often applied to aid healing and maintain vein closure.
  • Treated veins generally fade within a few weeks, with multiple sessions sometimes required for optimal results.
